G.C. 673 Gatew Teferi

G.C. 673 GATEW TEFERI, was born at Aesela in 1943 (E.C), the youngest child of a family of seven. After attending Hirna Primary School and Aseb Teferi Secondary School, he confesses that the glamour of the uniform largely influenced his decision to join the army. He has found that the Academy has given him ample opportunities to develop his skill as a sportsman and he has represented his company at volleyball, boxing, squash and tennis. A keen horseman, he rides whenever he has the opportunity.

Col. Gatew graduated in October 1973 and began his career as a platoon leader in 2nd Inf. Coy. of 11th Body Guard Bn. After a while he was elevated to Coy. commander. Later on he served as a Bn. operation, training, and intelligence officer. Soon after his accelerated promotion to the rank of captain in 1978 he was detached to 2nd Inf. Division to serve as a deputy operation and training officer. He was then transferred to Ground Forces Tpt. and Logistics Department in 1978 and 1980 consecutively. In 1982 he joined the Addis Ababa University and graduated with LLB (Bachelors of Law) in 1986. Until 1988 he was a legal advisor of the Ground Forces and in addition to this through 1991 he was an executive officer of the commanding General of the Ground Forces. He married Woizerit Almaz Jimma in 1979 (they intend to celebrate their 25th Jublee anniversary soon) and have three children, two boys and a girl, ages 23, 21, and 11. While he had full energy and profound love of his uniform he had to cease his service in 1991. Ultimately destiny drove him to the U.S.A. and now resides with his family in Springfield, Virginia
