February 09, 2009
To all Academy Alumni Members:
On behalf of the entire Abraha’s family, I would like to extend our gratitude and sincere thanks to all Alumni members and their families for organizing the memorial ceremony held on Feb 7th, honoring our beloved Yigzaw.
Col. Yigzaw Abraha left for Ethiopia to pay tribute to his recently deceased younger sister. He planned to come back for business as usual on January 29th. Unfortunately and unexpectedly, he did not make it.
The incident was really a big shock to our family and all his friends. For all of us who closely knew Yigzaw, both socially and professionally, his sudden death does not seem real or right. For a lot of reasons we still could not believe what has happened.
It is very painful to loose a loved one, especially when there is no sign to that effect. Situations like this remind us how fragile we are. That life, although cherished, is not always fair.
We were all impressed by the love, respect and honor shown by Yigzaw’s fellow officers. We appreciate what you all have done. We were touched not only by the kind words spoken, but also by the deep emotion conveyed during the memorial.
I am both humbled and honored to be invited to join the Alumni. Words cannot express how deeply moved I am for this gesture. Being a part of the Alumni will enable me to always be reminded of him and his outstanding military contributions through each of you. I hope that my presence will also remind each of you of Yigzaw’s memory.
Once again, thank you so much for comforting us and for standing by our side at this difficult and tragic time.
May God bless you and your family.
Sincerely,
Isaac Abraha and the entire Abraha family

In MEMORIAM
COL. YIGZAW ABRAHA

Lt. Colonel Yigzaw Abraha grew up in the town of Nekempte where he completed his primary education. He attended the General Wingate Secondary School and graduated in 1958. He was selected to attend the newly inaugurated Haile Selassie I Military Academy in Harar as a member of the second course, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1961. He graduated from the Para commando training in Debre Zeit with most of his classmates. He then served with the Ethiopian Brigade of the United Nations Forces in the Congo and was stationed in the City of Elizabethville (now Lubumbashi) in Katanga. He was a distinguished member of Special Force assigned to the Eastern Military Command where his outstanding accomplishments are legendary. He served in various capacities in the Ethiopian Army until the infamous Military Junta Derg came to power and thereafter rising to the rank of Lt. Col.
Having witnessed the atrocities committed by the tyrannical regime and sensitive to his own fate, he fled his beloved country and spent several years in the Sudan before settling in the United States of America. Lt. Col. Yigzaw was on a visit to Ethiopia to be with his mother and siblings before he met an untimely death in January 19, 2009. Lt. Col. Yigzaw was an outstanding officer and will be missed by his family and friends. He survived by a son, mother, sister and brother.

Alumni June '08 meeting
This month's meeting hosted by Shaleka Hailemariam & W/z Tessemie was a joyous and unique occasion. The Special outdoor arrangement made this bi-monthly meeting even more enjoyable for all ages.
We saw new faces, old faces and invited guests. Although the gracious host and our chairman Shaleka Hailemariam failed to rate this occasion in particular, the alumni members and invited guests who were there unanimously voted this to be one of the best "Andegna!"
Here is an e-mail testemonial from one of the guests who attended the meeting:
"Selam Shalequa and W/z Tessemie
Many many thanks for inviting us for this wonderful celebration where we were able to share our deep respect for former officers of highest intellect who greatly contributed for the well-being of our Motherland.
Despite the negative societal image caused by the heavy hands of Derg, I believe history will reveal the wonderful contribution of all service men and women that should be written in a gold plate.
Once again thank you so much for inviting me to this wonderful event. I hope you will share my testimonials to members of the Academy and their family.
With Warm Regards
Bineyam Gebrewold R.T(N) CNMT"
